Research

Sustainable management of New Zealand EEZ fisheries is supported by a significant investment in ongoing research.  Millions of dollars are spent on EEZ species research each year, funded by Deepwater Group shareholders and the Government.

Main areas of research include scientific research surveys to measure stock size, fish stock assessments to assess sustainable catch levels of the main deepwater species such as hoki, orange roughy, squid, ling, and hake to ensure the long-term sustainability of each fishery.  Significant research also goes into the continual improvement of fish products exported worldwide including quality assurance and technological improvements to optimise catch quality.

Another key research focus looks at ways to manage the interactions the industry has with the environment, including minimising any adverse affects the industry may have on marine mammals, seabirds and corals.

Extensive research is also undertaken to support the hoki fishery's Marine Stewardship Council certification. Research results are used in the development of management tools, including Ecological Risk Assessments and Fisheries Plans.
