Stock Assessments

New Zealand scientists annually review data collected during the previous year. These data and the review process are open to international peer review and the New Zealand scientists invite input from their peers offshore. From this best available independent scientific information, the Ministry prepares advice for the Minister for the annual review of Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) of New Zealand EEZ species.

Several sets of data are collected by scientists and industry vessel crews. These data are used in simulation models to estimate stock sizes, productivity and to model trends in the New Zealand EEZ species stocks under different catch options. From these analyses, management decisions are made to ensure sustainable utilisation of our fisheries resources.

Data inputs may include:

  • commercial catch rates
  • size and age structure of the fishery populations
  • environment consideration
  • trawl surveys
  • juvenile surveys
  • acoustic surveys

The process that leads to decisions on the TACC for each fish stock can be summarised in 4 steps:

1.  Set Objectives

      • The Ministry of Fisheries and Deepwater group set out clear objectives for the management of each fishery in consultation with technical advisors and other interested parties.

2. Measure

      • New Zealand and International scientists measure fish stocks.

3. Advise

      • The Ministry of Fisheries, in consultation with industry and other interested parties, advises the Minister of the stock assessment.

4. Decide

      • Based on the best advise driven by best available scientific information, the Minister decides the TACC for each fish stock under review.
