Interactions with the Environment

The Deepwater Group, in partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries, has developed comprehensive management strategies to minimise potential adverse effects caused during the harvesting of New Zealand's deepwater seafood resources.

This co-operative management approach ensures harvesting practices are conducted with consideration of adverse effects on the marine environment including interactions with seabirds,  marine mammals and the benthic community. The Deepwater Group funds ongoing research directed towards this objective.

Participants in deepwater fisheries adhere to operational procedures to mitigate adverse affects and crew training programmes have been developed to ensure all levels of interaction with the environment achieve the objectives of these procedures.
