Food Safety

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) sets legally enforced standards that ensure seafood products exported from New Zealand are safe to eat. NZFSA is a semi-autonomous government agency within the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Animal Products Legislation

All processors and exporters of seafood products from New Zealand are directed by the Animal Products Act to register risk management plans with NZFSA. These plans require companies to maintain the highest standards in every aspect of their operation, from good manufacturing practices and water management to cleaning and sanitation control.

Seafood Standards Council

The New Zealand seafood industry, in partnership with the NZFSA, has also established its own organisation, the Seafood Standards Council. The Council is committed to ensuring that the country's seafood products meet New Zealand food safety standards and the market access requirements of export markets.

Many New Zealand seafood companies have their own quality assurance programmes in place including various ISO accreditations.
